Mobile Development Team Leader (Garmin Health Team)


This is a Full-time position in Olathe, KS posted January 14, 2022.

We’re seeking a dedicated leader to direct and coordinate activities of a software engineering team made up of mobile application developers with diverse capability levels in the design of new features, enhancement of existing designs and development of test procedures.

Must be able to directly supervise software team members, consulting with Human Resources to address employee relations issues, hire and train new associates and oversee training and mentoring of all associates on your team.
We are looking for a full-time Software Engineering Team Leader to direct and support our Garmin Health SDK software engineer s at our headquarters in Olathe, Kansas (a beautiful suburb of Kansas City).

In this role, you’ll be responsible for coordinating and participating in generating software requirements and designs according to Garmin’s software development methodology for the Garmin Health SDKs used by Garmin’s corporate partners to interact directly with Garmin’s wearable devices.

tLead a team of Software Engineers, and/or Software Technicians, Software Project Managers, and/or Software Quality Engineers with diverse capability levels in the design of new products, enhancement of existing designs, and development of test procedures
tDirectly supervise software team members with daily observation, assuring appropriate attendance, and providing assistance to team members
tWork with Human Resources to address employee relations issues as needed including writing and conducting annual performance evaluations
tInterview, hire, and train new associates as directed by engineering management
tOversee training and mentoring of new associates in the arts of Software Engineering and project management
tCoordinate and participate in generating software requirements and designs for a product or family of products in accordance with Garmin’s software development methodology
tParticipate in software design reviews as necessary, assuring proper attendees and proper coverage of topics, imparting lessons learned and good design practices to all who attend
tCreate product development plans as directed by engineering management
tEnsure the team meets overall development goals in accordance with the product development plan or market requirements and ensure project milestones are met
tMonitor progress of the software teams in meeting product requirements and schedule compliance
tSet the tone for the team environment and build healthy team relationships

Participate in college campus interviewing and other recruiting activities
Perform other job-related duties as assigned EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Bachelors of Science Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering AND 5 years’ experience in a technical role performing duties similar to the functions of this team OR a minimum of ten years work experience performing a role substantially similar to the essential functions of this job description

tExcellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
tMust possess detailed knowledge and experience with high level language structure in C, C++, C# and/or Java relevant to Garmin’s business needs
tMust have 3+ years of experience as a direct line manager of teams of 5+
tMust have solid experience managing teams in a true Agile Scrum/Kanban environment
tDemonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
tDemonstrated ability to effectively manage technical human resources
tDemonstrated ability to work well with others under challenging circumstances


tPossess detailed knowledge and have prior experience with developing mobile applications for Android or iOS platforms
tExperience with code reviews
tExperience with directing, assigning, and reporting on projects/priorities
